They say rock stars get all the girls. But Miki knows that’s not always true. He, for one, though the guitarist of popular indie band Trainman, just can’t seem to get the girl. It’s kind of his fault, really. No one told him to fall in love with Jill. No one told him to stand still and watch as she moved on from a terrible breakup into the arms of another guy—a Japanese celebrity with the face of an angel and the body of a god.

So when someone else comes along, someone who finds him cute, smart, and funny (sometimes in the haha sort of way), will Miki finally move on? Or will he continue to pine for Jill?

What Drew Me In

Oh, this? This was an insta-buy for me. I have read the first book in this series–Songs Of Our Breakup–and loved it. It’s only natural that I one-click the shit out of this book, right?

What Made Me Stay

Perhaps it was my frayed mental state that made me think “Hm, is this story moving slow or what?” a few chapters in, so I’m not sure I’m being objective when I say that. It did feel slow at the start for me, but I have read Tria’s other books and I trusted her prose enough to pack the feels in and just punch me in the face when I least expected it, so I read on.

I read it after my shift, before bed. I read it as I was preparing to head out for a weekend happening. I read and finished it inside a 7-11 (too bad the gang always went to a Mini Stop), which was a very bad place to read especially when said punch was being delivered mercilessly. I had to stop a few times and stuff potato chips in my mouth to keep myself from crying. In a 7-11.

Tria’s prose is simply lovely, and I will never tire of it. Her talent lies in being able to string together words like a lyricist would and let her characters sing the songs of their lives to us with every turn of the page.

A heart that loves in a silent and steadfast way doesn’t usually get center stage in Filipino romance, but Tria focuses the spotlight on it with Songs To Get Over You. The novel shines with an entirely new repertoire of feels, mashed-up with a few pop culture nods (one of which only I apparently got, so far). It is a fitting second installment to her Playlist series, and I am excited to see what she’s got up her sleeve next.

This Book Made Me Wanna

  • Scold my younger self, because unexpressed emotions.
  • Own a cherry red guitar, even if I only know how to play a ukelele now.
  • Sing Stars by Simply Red. (I actually did last night.)
  • Hurt the author for making me have LSS over the other jingle.

Author Profile

author-jaytriaHi! I’m a writer of contemporary Young Adult and New Adult romance. These days I’m writing paranormal/fantasy too, and it’s a fun exercise. I’m often inspired by daydreams, celebrity crushes, a childhood fascination of Japanese drama and manga, and an incessant itch to travel.
